Overview of Your Entire Project

EmpowerAbility Launchpad is a transformative programme dedicated to empowering women with physical disabilities to rise above societal limitations and build their own economic futures through the power of online entrepreneurship. This initiative provides comprehensive training and dedicated mentorship, enabling participants to develop essential digital business skills, launch their ventures, and soar to new heights of independence and self-reliance.

The Problem we are Solving

Women with physical disabilities face a unique and often compounded set of challenges that hinder their economic empowerment:

Physical Barriers & Accessibility

Lack of accessible transportation, inaccessible infrastructure in educational institutions and workplaces, and limited availability of assistive devices can restrict their ability to access education, training, and employment opportunities.

Societal Stigma & Discrimination

Negative stereotypes and societal biases often lead to underestimation of their abilities, limiting opportunities in education, employment, and entrepreneurship. This can manifest as reluctance from employers to hire them or provide necessary accommodations.

Educational Disparities

They may face barriers in accessing quality education due to inaccessible school environments, lack of inclusive teaching methods, and societal beliefs that devalue their educational pursuits. Lower educational attainment directly impacts their employment prospects.

Limited Employment Opportunities

Due to the above factors, they often experience higher rates of unemployment or underemployment compared to both men with disabilities and women without disabilities. When employed, they are often relegated to lower-paying jobs with fewer opportunities for advancement.

Lack of Flexible Work Options

Many traditional workplaces lack the flexibility in hours or remote work options that could accommodate their health needs, transportation challenges, or the need for regular medical appointments.

Wage Gaps

Even when employed, they often earn less than their non-disabled peers and even less than men with disabilities for the same work, contributing to financial insecurity.

Intersectional Discrimination

They face discrimination based not only on their disability but also on their gender, and potentially other factors like race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status. This intersectionality can create even greater barriers to economic empowerment.

Lack of Role Models & Support Networks

Limited visibility of successful women with disabilities in business and a lack of tailored support networks can make it challenging to envision and pursue entrepreneurial paths.

Financial Constraints & Access

They may have limited personal financial resources and face difficulties accessing loans or business development support due to negative perceptions about their business acumen or perceived higher risk.

Gender-Based Violence & Harassment

Unfortunately, women and girls with disabilities are at a higher risk of experiencing gender-based violence and harassment, which can further impede their ability to pursue education and economic opportunities.

Internalised Barriers

Years of facing societal limitations and negative perceptions can sometimes lead to lower self-esteem and a lack of confidence in their abilities, hindering their pursuit of entrepreneurial ventures.

Our Approach: Cultivating Entrepreneurial Minds Through Flexible and Focused Learning

Our approach for this intensive 6-month programme is centred on providing  young women with physical disabilities with a flexible yet focused pathway to entrepreneurial success. Recognising the diverse needs and potential accessibility requirements of our participants, we have designed a blended learning model that combines the interactive engagement of online sessions with the self-paced learning afforded by individual study. This allows participants to learn at a rhythm that suits them while still benefiting from direct instruction and peer interaction. Through the 6 months they will have monthly access to their business mentor (Kathryn Main) who will help them to build out their business models.

We are committed to creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment that acknowledges and addresses the unique challenges faced by young women with physical disabilities in pursuing economic empowerment. Our approach emphasises building not only business acumen and financial literacy but also confidence, resilience, and a strong sense of community. Through dedicated support and mentorship integrated throughout the programme, we aim to equip these aspiring entrepreneurs with the tools and mindset needed to navigate the entrepreneurial landscape and build sustainable businesses.
